Which NYC borough has the best coffee shops?

By Coffely ·

Ask five New Yorkers where the best coffee is and you’ll hear about five boroughs. We went to the numbers instead: the Google ratings and opening hours of all 1,179 coffee shops in Coffely’s New York City directory, compared borough by borough.

Key findings

  • Manhattan has the best-rated coffee shops. They average 4.42 stars on Google, and 55% are rated 4.5 or higher.
  • Local coffee shops are good everywhere. Independent cafés average between 4.37 and 4.51 stars in every borough. Most of the gap between boroughs comes from chains.
  • Staten Island has the most chains: 45% of its coffee shops, led by Dunkin' and Starbucks.
  • JFK drags Queens down. The 13 coffee shops at the airport average 2.47 stars. Without them, Queens averages 4.28 instead of 4.19.
  • Manhattan goes to bed early. Only 7% of its coffee shops stay open until 10 PM, against 31% in Queens.

The ranking: average Google rating by borough

Manhattan has the highest average rating, 4.42 stars, and the largest share of coffee shops rated 4.5 or higher (55%). Brooklyn is second with 4.38, and Staten Island is last with 4.13.

Local coffee shops are good in every borough

Split each borough into local, independent coffee shops and chain locations, and the ranking mostly disappears. Local coffee shops average between 4.37 and 4.51 stars wherever they are. Chains range much wider, from 3.70 on Staten Island to 4.31 in Manhattan.

Queens4.373.7529%
Staten Island4.493.7045%

The best-rated chain locations are in Manhattan, where the biggest chains are Starbucks, Blank Street, and 787 Coffee. Staten Island has the highest share of chains (45%), mostly Dunkin', Starbucks, and Tim Hortons, and they average 3.70 stars there.

The takeaway: once you pick a local coffee shop, the borough matters much less than the shop. Our local coffee shops page lists all 793 of them, top rated first.

Queens and the airport problem

Queens has a handicap no other borough has: JFK. The 13 coffee shops inside the airport average 2.47 stars, and only one is rated 4 or higher: Star Mountain Coffee (4.6).

Leave the airport out and Queens averages 4.28 instead of 4.19, and its local coffee shops go from 4.37 to 4.43. A layover is not a fair test of a borough’s coffee.

Early birds and night owls

Ratings aren’t everything when you need a coffee at 5:45 AM or 11 PM, and by opening hours the boroughs line up very differently.

Manhattan keeps office hours: 12% of its coffee shops open by 6 AM, 7% stay open until 10 PM, and none are open 24 hours. Queens stays up latest: 31% of its coffee shops are open until 10 PM or later, and it has 9 of the city’s 18 24-hour coffee shops. Early risers do best in the Bronx and on Staten Island, where 40% of coffee shops open by 6 AM.

So which borough has the best coffee?

It depends on what you want from it:

How we compared

  • We used all 1,179 New York City coffee shops in the Coffely directory, compiled from public Google Maps listings and last updated in October 2026. How the directory is built.
  • Ratings are Google’s star ratings. Our New York data doesn’t include review counts, so every coffee shop counts the same, however many reviews it has. Averages leave out the 12 coffee shops without a rating.
  • “Local” means not part of a chain. Small New York businesses with a few locations still count as local.
  • “Open by 6 AM” and “until 10 PM” mean on at least one day of the week.
